I glued the laminate to the pt with contact cement then added 1 4 inch plywood to the sides ripped wide enough to create a depth of about 3 4 inch within the box. Although most planer manuals advise against planing stock less than 1 4 thick i find that if i m careful i can easily work stock down to 3 16 and sometimes even 1 8. For a low budget approach mdf sealed well with blo gives a very smooth hard surface.
